Upcoming Perth events at the Fremantle Arts Centre and Rockingham Writers Centre

I’ll be appearing at a couple of writerly events in the next few months in the Perth region. Firstly, I’m conducting a crime writing workshop at the Fremantle Arts Centre on Saturday July 1st 1.30-4.30pm. Tickets are $25 and can be booked through the Out of the Asylum group. Here’s a blurb for the event:

TROUBLE IS OUR BUSINESS: WRITING CRIME FICTION

This workshop with crime fiction author Guy Salvidge will interrogate a line-up of shady crime fiction suspects, including:

  • The Past is an Evil River—historical precedents including Raymond Chandler, Graham Greene, Patricia Highsmith and Jim Thompson.
  • The Art of Plotting Murder—how to start with a bang and keep the tension rising.
  • Criminal Characterisation—motivations and foibles for protagonists and antagonists alike.
  • Quick Deaths, Prolonged Deaths—the crime short story versus the crime novel.
  • Murder She Wrote—contemporary female crime authors like Megan Abbott and Candice Fox.
  • Where the Bodies are Buried—publishers, awards, agents and other forms of lowlife.
  • And much, much more

Secondly, I’m appearing on a panel at the Rockingham Writers Convention alongside Monique Mulligan, co-editor of Writing the Dream, and a host of authors who appear in this excellent writing guide from Serenity Press. I’ve just seen the program for the rest of the convention and it looks fabulous.
